Your Home or Business Building Checklist: Five Key Contracting Issues

If you are fortunate enough to be involved in building your own home or business space, congratulations! This is an exciting process that not everyone gets to engage in, allowing you to have great influence over the future of your living space or workplace. But if you’re like most homeowners in New Jersey, your business isn’t building. Fortunately, the team at RFC Excavation and Contracting does make it our business, and we want to share our expertise with you! Read on to find out if you’ve considered the top five things on our new construction checklist.

1. Size Matters. How much room do you need for your family or your employees? What about the bathrooms? Hallways? Working with a skilled contractor can help you to get a good idea of what you’ll need so you have the space to get it done.

2. Quality Contractors. Unless you happen to be a jack of all trades, you will be hiring a variety of contractors during your construction project in NJ! To make sure you choose a good one, look for someone who is insured, has good reviews online, and if you can, see if you can find a local recommendation! Only the happiest and unhappiest customers usually post online reviews, so for the best picture of your contractor’s quality, find a real person to talk to.

3. Utilities Setup. How are you going to bring plumbing and electrical services to your home? Are you on a municipal grid? Make sure you can “tap” into these services conveniently. Some areas are better served with a personal well, and may need generators in the winter. Make sure your building plans accommodate these unique needs.

4. Regulatory Issues. Who pulls the permit for your construction? When do you need that permit? Are any other filings required? If you are working with a high-class contracting service in NJ, your contractor should handle this for you. If not, contact your city or county’s regulatory department to find out.

5. Septic Tanks. Many places in NJ still manage waste through personal septic tanks. While many people are familiar with the challenges of managing an old tank, when you build new, you get to install a brand-new septic tank! Check with your construction team to ensure that it is the right size to meet your current and future needs, and to choose the best device for your space and needs.

Have you checked all these items off your list? If so, it may be time to start your project! For all your excavation and contracting needs in Northern New Jersey, don’t hesitate to give RFC a call!
